Plant & Food Science

The Discipline of Plant & Food Science primarily conducts research to improve the productivity and end-use quality of crops by developing new cultivars and environmentally-benign methods to manage weeds, plant pathogens and insects. World-class breeding programmes in barley and faba bean are managed by Discipline staff, while there is also a close affiliation with the Australian Grain Technologies and their wheat breeding programme. The Discipline shares a close association with a number of Cooperative Research Centres including the Molecular Plant Breeding CRC, CRC for Australian Weed Management, and the CRC Plant Biosecurity in addition to other co-located partners at the Waite Campus including the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics. The Discipline is currently developing a research capacity in food science to strengthen the link between agricultural production and human health. Reflecting its breadth of world-class research, the Discipline is composed of several research cluster groups highlighted below.
