Waite Campus is located on 174 hectares in the Adelaide foothills with a view to the sea and the city, just fifteen minutes away from the North Terrace Campus by car or bus. The Campus is home to a number of Schools within the University of Adelaide's Faculty of Sciences, and to a number of research partners in the Commonwealth Scientific Research Organisation (CSIRO), Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA), the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) and the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics.

University of Adelaide staff and students work with staff from these organisations, giving them a unique opportunity to gain practical and theoretical knowledge through participation in ongoing national and international research projects.

Waite Campus is a centre for excellence in molecular plant breeding, horticulture, viticulture, oenology, integrated pest management, weed management and soil and water management. The Faculty is a major collaborator in Cooperative Research Centres on this Campus for Viticulture, Molecular Plant Breeding, Weed Management and Salinity.

The Campus includes the internationally renowned Waite Arboretum and Urrbrae House Historic Precinct.

Facilities
1500 students and staff are located at Waite, at what is now the largest agricultural research and teaching centre in Australia, with access to state-of-the art facilities for plant research and wine science.

Campus facilities include:

  • laboratories equipped for chemical, genetic, biochemical, pediological, physiological and ecological studies
  • controlled environment containment and quarantine for work with animals and plants
  • molecular biology laboratories for the study of micro-organisms, plants and animals
  • special purpose laboratories for cytogenetics, cereal breeding, cereal quality, anaerobic microbiology, insect pathology, wool strength evaluation, sensory evaluation and horticultural field studies
  • plant tissue culture
  • insectary, animal houses
  • advanced small plot machinery for field experiments with cereals and pastures
  • X-ray diffractometer, confocal microscope, electron microscopes, NMR facility, GC/mass spectrometer and infra-red and UV/visible spectrophotometers
