Event Bookings

Urrbrae House is an accredited museum which is also utilised by the University of Adelaide for a variety of educational and cultural activities. Urrbrae House is not a function centre.  However, some of its public rooms and grounds are available for hire by community groups, organisations and for a limited number of special private social functions including weddings.

To limit the wear and tear on the House and grounds, only one event booking is taken per weekend. Those hiring Urrbrae House and its gardens are asked to respect the site’s unique setting, and its heritage furnishings and fixtures.  Any attendee of an event who causes deliberate damage to Urrbrae House and/or its grounds, exhibits indecent behaviour or displays a substantial breach of decorum will be required to leave the event.

Up to 100 people for an event can be accommodated inside Urrbrae House.  Events involving 100 or more people need to be held in the grounds.  For such events it is recommended that a marquee be set up on the Croquet Lawn adjacent to the House.  Urrbrae House does not provide marquees; for such an event you will need to arrange to hire a marquee and have it professionally erected and dismantled.

Private hire of Urrbrae House and its gardens in 2009
Charges:

  • Up to 100 guests = $187 (including GST) per hour for a minimum of 4 hours
  • 100 or more guests = $242 (including GST) per hour for a minimum of 4 hours
  • In addition you will need to pay an insurance fee of $110 per event.  A non-refundable deposit of $110 is required to confirm your booking.  This deposit will subsequently cover the insurance fee if you do not cancel your booking

These fees entitle you and your guests to use agreed areas of Urrbrae House, its gardens and adjacent lawned areas.  This charge also covers the cost of Urrbrae House employing casual events staff who represent the House and ensure its appropriate use during your event.  Urrbrae House staff are willing to provide tours of the House to your guests during your event.  Please note that our staff take care of Urrbrae House and while they will facilitate your use of the House and grounds, they are not employed to act as serving staff or to undertake manual labour for your event.

Catering
Where food is to be provided during an event, a professional caterer must be used for health and safety reasons.  We do not provide catering for functions but the Urrbrae House Co-ordinator is able to supply the names of caterers who have previously catered events in Urrbrae House.

At the end of an event, caterers are expected to leave the Urrbrae House kitchen, back porch and bin area in the same state as they were prior to the event.  Caterers and/or professional serving staff are required to clear away all glasses and crockery used during the event from Urrbrae House and its gardens.  Glass left in the gardens is a particular safety hazard because of public access to these areas.  Please note that Urrbrae House has only a small number of bins available for rubbish disposal; additional arrangements for rubbish disposal may need to be made for larger events.

Serving Alcohol
Please note that Urrbrae House is not a licensed venue.  If you intend to serve alcohol at your event, you will need to be responsible for obtaining a Limited Liquor licence if required by the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner. http://www.olgc.sa.gov.au/splash.shtm

Weddings
Many couples like to have their ceremony in the rose garden, with family and friends able to have drinks and nibbles inside Urrbrae House while the couple have photographs taken, followed by a reception inside the House (for smaller weddings) or under a marquee (for larger weddings).  It is also possible to arrange for the ceremony to be held indoors especially if the weather turns inclement.

Please note that Urrbrae House is best suited for small and medium sized weddings of 150 guests or less.  It is not suitable for very large weddings with over 200 guests.
